The Maintenance Worker is responsible for cleaning and disinfecting all areas of the MIT campus including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, polishing, shampooing carpets, cleaning and restocking restrooms, trash removal, etc., as well as maintaining the school building and grounds, performing minor maintenance of an assigned building, setting up equipment for school events and assisting school personnel with work requests. This position also ensures that the site retains a high standard of cleanliness and reflects a safe operating condition.
The Transportation Worker is responsible for transporting students to and from school and other sites within designated route(s) and to ensure the safety of the student passengers while in a school vehicle. This position is responsible for the safe operation of a school bus and for ensuring the safety of student passengers while meeting established bus schedules. Drivers may be assigned to drive wheelchair busses.
DUTIES AND RESOPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the Mission, Vision and Core Values of Maricopa Institute of Technology.
- Obey all traffic laws, Arizona Department of Transportation rules, and Estrella Educational Foundation d.b.a. Maricopa Institute of Technology policies and procedures and observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses transportation.
- Transport only authorized students on assigned routes to and from school, and/or on field trips, or to and from special events and follow Arizona Department of Public Safety transportation requirements.
- Comply with mandatory safety regulations by inspecting the bus before each operation for mechanical defects and notifying the proper authority of any mechanical failure. Note all discrepancies and/or malfunctions using the Vehicle Check List and Maintenance Log at the conclusion of each day.
- Ensure bus cleanliness both inside and outside by following MIT procedures. Check the bus after each run for lost items and/or damage.
- Maintain discipline and supervision while transporting only authorized students, report undisciplined students to the proper authority and discharge students only at authorized stops.
- Inform students about safety requirements.
- Report verbally all accidents immediately and follow-up with a written report within 24 hours.
- Attend in-service training for continued professional development.
- Arranges furniture and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for special events.
- Assist skilled maintenance workers with projects (e.g. transporting and /or securing materials, completing specific tasks, etc.)
- Cleans school buildings and grounds areas as needed and/or assigned.
- Installs system component parts, classroom and office equipment and facility components.
- Maintains assigned vehicle, tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition.
- Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job duties effectively and efficiently.
- Performs a wide variety of general and semiskilled maintenance activities (e.g. carpentry, painting, electrical, etc.).
- Prepares written materials (e.g. repair status, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.
- Repairs furniture and building system components.
- Responds to emergency situations during and after work hours.
- Transports a wide variety of tools, equipment and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials at job site.
- Perform any and all job related duties assigned by supervisor.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One (1) year experience in school bus transportation of students
- Previous custodial experience preferred
- Previous maintenance experience
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:
- Motor Vehicle Division Driving Record in good standing for the last 39 months retroactive from date of hire.
- Valid Arizona Driver’s License
- Arizona School Bus Driver Certificate with CDL Class B, including passenger and student endorsements
- First Aid and CPR Certifications
- A valid Fingerprint Clearance Card
SKILLS,KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of English required to read and interpret schedules, memos, instructions on tools and equipment, to communicate with co-workers, answer routine inquiries, to explain bus and safety procedures and to communicate with others in obtaining information.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and ability to maintain a safe working environment.
- Ability to be available for extra duty assignments such as field and activity trips as required.
- Ability to make decisions in a variety of situations regarding priorities and effectively handling emergencies.
- Familiarity and compliance with safety procedures.
- Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, parents and administrators.
- Ability to bend, climb, stoop, kneel, lift 50 pounds and reach to load and unload disabled students and/or move students for safety or in emergency situations.
- Physical examination required.
- Ability to work in conditions that include an environment that has seasonal extreme temperatures, bus fumes and odors and bus noise and vibration.
- Operating equipment used in skilled trades, power and hand tools, etc.; adhering to safety practices; handling hazardous materials; and planning and managing projects.
- Perform algebra and/or read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: standard methods, materials and tools used in assigned skilled trade; and safety practices and procedures.
- Schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment.
- Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; developing effective work relationships; displaying mechanical aptitude; working under time constraints; and complying with OSHA/TOSHA regulations.

- Maintenance Worker:
- The work environment can be indoor or outdoor, subject to constant interruptions and fast paced with a high level of activity.
- The noise level ranges from quiet to loud, but is usually moderate.
- The work environment includes regular exposure to fumes or airborne particles, dust, dirt, odors, cleaning agents, toxic or caustic chemicals, seasonal heat and cold, potential contact with bodily fluids and infectious disease.
- Bus Driver:
- The work environment is frequently exposed to loud noise levels, fumes or airborne particles, noxious odors, vibrations from driving a bus and traffic.
- The employee is frequently required to sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel, use foot controls to drive, reach with hands and arms, climb, bend, stoop, and kneel and talk and hear.
- This position is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Twelve-month position, At-Will, hourly; benefits in accordance with Board policies
